Well, it had to happen. How could it not?

As you’ll be aware if you’ve been reading this weblog for a while, each October I used to make a downloadable Halloween mix CD, and post it both here and on my other weblog. [Check the Halloween tag to peruse the archive – links are probably dead, but always happy to re-up on request.]

Last year, I knocked it on the head simply because filling eighty minutes with a consistent mix of top quality horror-related material was becoming a bit of a stretch, but since I’m now back on the fake airwaves, what more reason did I need to trek back through a whole decade’s worth of Halloween mixes, picking out my favourite bits and assembling an All Time Greatest Hits of Horror Rock / Best Halloween Radio Show Ever type play-list, with a little bit of added talking thrown in?

So, here it is. I can’t speak for talking bits, but if the music herein doesn’t get you in the mood for a ragin’ good All Hallows Eve, nothing will.

So I knocked out another one of these radio shows last weekend.

Featuring a semi-accidental law & order / crime & punishment theme, this show delves into the extraordinary world of ‘70s Italian crime movie soundtracks. Also featuring big hitters like Slab City, Fealty, Obnox and Melting Hand, alongside such plucky newcomers as The Beatles, John Coltrane and Neil Young.

Being that Mixcloud is a modern thing, when you upload a file they naturally make you pick a “primary tag” from a list of about thirty entirely inappropriate options. I played safe with “OTHER” this time, but I was really tempted to go for “BUSINESS”, such is my confidence that the music herein will assist you in takin’ care of such.

I threw this one together pretty quickly, so as a result a few corrections and clarifications are in order:

1. Due to some confusingly labelled MP3s, I misidentified the title of the Emerald Web track that closes the show. How could I forget that it is actually called CHASING THE SHADOW BEAST?

2. I also forgot to mention that the Obnox album ‘Templo del Sonido’ is out on the Astral Spirits label, who can be visited here.

3. Perhaps most importantly, I should clarify that when I casually referred to actor Maurizio Merli as the “bitch-slapping don of Italian cop movies” at one point, I was not in fact making some horrendously misogynistic comment, but was using the term in it’s urban dictionary defined form to refer to Merli’s endearing habit of slapping (predominantly male) suspects open-handed whilst playing crusading cop characters.

4. Likewise, we should note that Ice-T’s description of the late Barbara Bush is ill-mannered at best, but I certainly wasn’t going to tell him that to his face. My apologies for any offence caused.

5. I also implied during the show that Sleep’s ‘Dragonaut’ has some connection to cars. Upon closer inspection of the lyrics, this does not seem to be the case. I'd just assumed, y'know, drag = dragsters, drag-racing, etc. I was quite tired. I was wrong.

6. And finally, my apologies too to any Italian speakers for the wide variety of names, titles and phrases I no doubt mangled over the course of these two hours of live-ish radio.

Summer Shoulders.

So it's summer, as you may have noticed. I know this primarily because it's too hot in my room, because I sat on a beach with some people last weekend, and because I've finally completed work on my 2008 Plan B Summer Mix CD.

Assembling a satisfactory track-list proved a ridiculously painstaking process, as these things can easily become with the possibilities for endlessly tweaking put at our fingers by iTunes.... we can agonise over the overall feeling conveyed by the CD over a matter of weeks, crafting watertight segues and checking them for leaks... man, remember the old days with the tapedeck, where if you decide you're not entiiiiirely sure about that 13th Floor Elevators track you laid down four songs back, well, tough luck, it's there already.

Anyway, I'm not going to post the finished CD for you - that'll be hard copy only, as is only respectful to my friends and CD swapping buddies.

What I'm going to do is post LAST YEAR'S CD, which came together a lot more easily, and which is still basically my ultimate Summer Music tour de force, featuring many of the usual sunny suspects and relatively little disorientating weirdness, and overall I'm still very pleased with it.

(Several of the best tracks I should point out for grabbed directly from another excellent Summer Cd put together a while back by that indefatigable knight of the mix tape, Grant Balfour, and that the cover art is ripped from a comic by Bryan Lee O'Malley, so credit where it's due etc.)

STEREO SANCTITY RADIO SHOW #8

This one is a bit different to my previous radio shows, in that it doesn't feature me talking, and is instead more along the lines of a downloadable mix CD, with individual mp3s, cover art and track details. I haven't done this for any particular reasion, other than a general lack of time to record a "proper" show, and the fact that I had a really sweet 80 minute playlist and didn't want to lose anything off it. If you yearn for some talking, there are at least some mysterious ghost voices to keep you company, and details about where all the tracks came from can be found within the download.

I'm not sure whether or not I'll do talking shows or mix CD shows in future; I guess I'll throw the question open to "the people", and take a poll. Do you enjoy my stumbling tributes to the glory days of John Peel, or would you be happier with a more easily manageable mix of awesome songs undisturbed by any witless DJ yammering? If you have a preference either way, please let me know via the usual channels, and if you veer toward the latter viewpoint, don't worry, I won't take it as a personal insult or anything.

So, after a brief hiatus brought about by the collapse of Podbean, I've decided to get my radio show going again via the simpler means of Rapid Share.

It's download only I'm afraid, but the procedure is pretty straightforward: click on the link above, click the button to download for free, type the four digits into the security box, download the .zip file, unzip it and you're home free. It's about 90mb, comes as two mp3 files, and should take only a couple of minutes to download with a regular internet connection. Any problems or fuck ups - please let me know.
